“100-year-old ad looks for ‘hefty’ women cops”
An ad from 100 years ago has been found in London, inviting women to join the police force — but they must be hefty girls who cannot marry.
The ad, from the 1930s, shows a lack of equal opportunity back in those days.
The newspaper ad says police were looking to hire physically robust and “fairly good looking” advertisement women who could “withstand rough and tumble”.
The, stated: “Women with good brains plus good physique are wanted. The pay is good but they must never marry or their careers will end!”
It further added the police were interested in recruiting “spinsters and widows, girls in universities and public schools, and girls with training in nursing and social work”. However, “married women need not apply”.
It said in capital letters that “THEY MUST BE HEFTY”, and applicants must be “at least five feet four inches high” or around 163 centimetres.
