“No drinking the old champagne”
Nearly 100 bottles of champagne have been discovered in an ancient shipwreck off southern Sweden — but the Swedish government says nobody is allowed to drink them.
The 19th-century champagne and mineral water were found in a shipwreck 58 meters deep off the coast.
Wine and water experts want to carry out laboratory tests on the contents of the well-preserved bottles, but the government has put their foot down.
It says the shipwreck is “an ancient relic” and needs to be protected.
“You must not damage the ancient remains, which also includes taking items from the wreck, such as champagne bottles,” said a government official.
It’s believed the ship could have been on the way to the royal family in Stockholm or in Russia when ship sank sometime in the second half of the 19th century about 150 years ago.
