“Monkeys on the loose”
Forty-three monkeys used for medical research that escaped a compound in South Carolina have been spotted in nearby woods, and workers are using food to try to recapture them.
The Rhesus macaques made a break for it Wednesday after an employee didn’t fully lock a door as she fed and checked on them.
“They are very social monkeys and travel in groups, so when the first couple go out the door the others tend to just follow right along,” a spokesperson said.
The main goal is to have the monkeys returned safely. “I think they are having an adventure,” the spokesperson said.
Police said the monkeys pose no risk to public health. They have no diseases. The facility breeds the monkeys to sell to medical and other researchers.
