“Man adopts squirrel”
Four years ago in a Sussex churchyard, Mehmet Onal, 58, found a baby squirrel with a broken leg.
He took it to an animal rescue who said they could not help, then he took it to a vet.
‘She said that by law she had to put him down,’ he said.
So he decided to nurse the squirrel back to health himself.
For eight weeks Mehmet cared for the squirrel, later named Alvin.
When Alvin was well again, Mehmet returned to the churchyard to release him, but the animal kept going back to him.
Now, four years later, the two are inseparable.
They share Oreos, shopping trips, and what Mr Onal calls ‘unconditional love … loyalty and respect’.
Alvin and Mehmet have become best friends.
‘But some people call him vermin because he is a grey squirrel,” said Mehmet. “He is my boy. He is no vermin.’
