Andrew Biggs was born in Brisbane, Australia. Originally a journalist, he has lived in Thailand since arriving on Valentine’s Day, 1989.
He started Nation Junior Magazine, a magazine for Thai high school students which incorporated news and features all in English. In 1994, NJ Live, Thailand’s first English talk-back radio show, was launched, hosted by The Nation’s Suthichai Yoon and Andrew.
Then in 1996 he began hosting Talk Of TheTown in the morning on Channel 3, a program that would run for nine years and bring him to the forefront of English language teaching.
Other popular shows he hosted on TV have included Good Morning Thailand, English Minute and a segment on the Channel 3 Evening News.
He has written 19 books in Thai. The first, Thailand In My Eyes, was a number one best-seller and became the second-biggest selling book of the year. He followed that up with How To Speak English Like A Guava, which has sold more than 300,000 copies in Thailand. Altogether he has sold more than one million copies of his books.
In 2002 he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and the Thai language from Ramkhamhaeng University, the first westerner to graduate from that university. More recently he completed a Master’s Degree in Education, majoring in Curriculum Innovation, in 2022.
He has received numerous awards from the Thai Government; the Ministry of Culture awarded him Excellent User Of The Thai Language (the first westerner to receive the award), and Thai Spoken Language Ambassador. In addition he received the Petch Siam Award for excellence in using the Thai language.
In 2008 Thais voted him one of the “coolest” bald men. In the same year he completed the Bangkok Marathon and wrote about it in the Bangkok Post, leading to a weekly column which ran for 12 years. In 2013 the Australian Government recognized his work in their “Australia Unlimited Global 50”, the top Australian expatriates making names for themselves around the world.
These days Andrew Biggs is officially Big Boss of Andrew Biggs Academy, a language institute under the Ministry of Education. He has a Twitter/X following of 2.5 million and hosts two radio shows on FM106 and FM93.5.
