“Man to open 130,000 baht bottle of beer”
A man has won a 150-year-old bottle of beer in an auction — and now he says he intends to open it.
Dougal Gunn Sharp, a brewery owner from Edinburgh in Scotland, is the owner of an 1875 bottle of Allsopp’s legendary Arctic Ale.
The bottle cost him £3,000, or about 130,000 baht. It was made for explorers going to the Arctic circle who needed a strong beer to keep them warm.
The beer has an alcohol strength of 9% and six times the calorie content of a modern average beer.
Sharp says he wants to open the bottle of beer and replicate its contents.
“Some people might think it’s madness to open it, but I think the real madness would be to leave it sitting on a shelf,” he said.
The beer should go on sale later this year at pubs in Scotland and London.
