“Neil the Seal is back”
A one-ton elephant seal has arrived in Tasmania for his annual visit — and is once again causing property damage and general chaos.
Neil the seal, who has become a local celebrity because of his yearly appearances, comes out of the water and make himself at home wherever he pleases, with little regard for fences, gardens, or homes.
Locals have learned to wait him out until he decides to head back to sea, which is normally after about five days.
Neil – a five-year-old elephant seal – goes wherever he pleases and doesn’t care what’s in his way.
As one politician put it, he’s “the only bloke in Tasmania who can stop traffic, ignore everyone, and still be loved for it”.
At one tonne, he hasn’t stopped growing. Neil the seal could grow to as big as three and a half tonnes.
