“Slowest song will finish in 640 years”
A small organ in Germany is currently playing the world’s slowest piece of music, and this week there was a rare chord change.
The music was written by composer John Cage and first began being played more than 25 years ago.
The name of the piece of music is the “ORGAN²/ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible)” and it is scheduled to finish on Sept. 4, 2640.
The rare chord change on Wednesday will represent the completion of about 4% of the 639-year endeavor.
An electric-powered blower system sends wind into the organ to create a continuous sound. A chord change, done manually, means that the sound of the organ pipes changes either because new sounds are added or existing sounds end.
Sandbags hold down the keys, and notes change only once every few years.
