“We all just love this smell”
What’s the best smell in the world? According to scientists, it’s vanilla.
Vanilla has been crowned the world’s favourite smell by a team of scientists from the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
The scientists presented ten scents, including sweaty feet, decaying fish, and rose, to 235 people from nine different cultures around the world.
These people included city-dwellers to hunter-gatherers in the south-east Asian rainforests.
Vanilla came out number one, followed by peaches at number two and lavender at number three.
“We wanted to examine if people around the world have the same smell perception and like the same types of odour, or whether this is something that is culturally learned,” said one of the scientists, Dr Artin Arshamian.
“Traditionally it has been seen as cultural, but we can show that culture has very little to do with it.”
