“How do you spell ‘winner’?”
A 13-year-old who came second in last year’s National Spelling Bee won the competition this week in the United States.
Faizan Zaki, from Texas, who lost in a tiebreaker last year, outlasted eight other accomplished spellers to win the title on Thursday night.
The annual spelling bee is a popular event for American children since it began in 1925 and is now televised live.
Faizan’s final word was very obscure. It was “eclaircissement” which means “an enlightened explanation of something that had formerly been hidden”.
Told to take a deep breath, Faizan didn’t ask a single question before spelling it correctly, and he pumped his fists and collapsed to the stage after saying the final letter.
Faizan wins $52,500 or about 1.7 million baht.
