“Nobody can climb up Mt Everest”
A huge chunk of ice is blocking the route up Mount Everest from Base Camp in Nepal just as peak climbing season gets under way in the Himalayas.
There is no way round the 30 metre high block of ice just under Camp 1.
The only option is to wait for the ice block, called a “serac”, to melt – climbers hope this will happen within days.
Up to 800 people climb to the summit of Mt Everest every year, and this is a very popular time of year for people to make the attempt to get to the top.
But for this week, nobody can climb.
Officials tried artificial ways to melt the ice but they haven’t worked.
“We don’t have any options other than to wait for it melting and crumbling itself,” an official said.
